Ch’en Kua (fl. mid-16th c.)
Ming Dynasty
Ch’en Kua (style name Tzu-cheng; sobriquet T’o-chiang) was a native of Ch’ang-chou (Kiangsu province) and the son of Ch’en Tao-fu. Broad-minded by nature, he was fond of drinking and carried on in the carefree tradition of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” of the Eastern Tsin (317-420). He also excelled at painting flowers, following in his father’s style. His brushwork was strong and fleet, and his use of monochrome ink wash rich and moist. He is best known for his paintings of plum blossoms.
In this album are monochrome paintings of camellia, chrysanthemum, hibiscus, hollyhock, lotus, mallow, gardenia, hydrangea, orchid, and plum blossoms, making for a total of ten leaves. Despite the apparent simplicity of the brushwork, it is full of spirit.
