Steeped in family studies since childhood, he also excelled at painting and calligraphy. This work written with mature, fluid brushwork is an excellent example of Wen’s wild cursive script. Done in 1559, it was a gift to Xiang Yuanbian and features the 985th character from the “Thousand Character Classic” (“gu 孤”) as Xiang’s accession number. Associating with the Wen family, Xiang when acquiring a work often asked for Wen’s opinion. Wen, gifted at seal carving, also often did Xiang’s collection seals. This scroll was later combined with a Tang Yin painting, and its Xiang seals and the painting by Xiang along with his inscription and seals were forgeries added at that time.
