The ancestors of the Li Family came to Taiwanese and settled in Daxi. Li's fifth son later moved to Yuemei, where the rice production based at, to start a rice business. The renowned business name Li Jin-Xing was established as he succeeded in commercial rice through river transportation.
Daxi had many shocos and shops bearing the Li name; Yuemei Passageway was built to ease business travelers' move between Daxi and Yuemei. Soon afterwards, the farmers in Yuemei also delivered produce to the port via the Passage, and continued so until the decline of river transportation.
The entry point of Yuemei Passageway is in the alley between No. 38 and No. 40 Heping Rd.. It has a built-in arcade facade that was connected to the veranda. The original design adopted concave brick walls bearing the pillars at both sides. In 1998, when the Daxi Heping Rd.. Embellishing Project was on, the Old Street residents decided to polish the facade by adding the "Yuemei Passageway" sign on the front with a washed granolithic depiction of a pair of lions playing with ornate balls to signal abundant luck.
The remaining part of the Passage is not long. You can enter from Heping Old Street, continue on the gently sloping path, walk pass Provincial Hwy No. 3 via the underground and turn left to Yuemei Rd. It goes into Yuemei area, an open field of rice paddies. The name of Yuemei derived from the crescent-moon shaped terrace forming part of Dahan River.
