Late 17th century) Ch’ing Dynasty Lan Shen (style name; Hsieh-ch’ing) was a native of Hangchow, Chekiang, and the grandson of Lan Ying (1585-?) Lan Shen inherited his grandfather’s tradition of landscape painting and was marvelous in creating complicated variations of landscapes which combine the methods of the ancients. His calligraphy is casual and elegant without being commonplace. In his inscription on this painting, Lan Shen wrote that he was imitating Li Ch’eng (fl. 10th century), but the style is actually completely derived from that of his grandfather. Although Lan Shen’s style is not as forceful and mature as that of Lan Ying, it still has its own excellent points. The inscription on this painting is dated to the sixth lunar month of 1671. The painting is from the album “Collected Works of Ming Dynasty Painters.” Most of the paintings were probably done in the summer of that year and then later apparently collected together to form an album by famous painters of Hangchow from the late Ming and early Ch’ing. Unfortunately, no records of collectors are in the album, so it is difficult to acquire an understanding of the background to the paintings.
