/ 內容簡介(英文) / Mi Fu (1052-1107), the famed Sung painter-calligrapher, was also a fanatic collector of unusual and exotically shaped rocks. In Anhwei, while inactive as an official, he saw a large, convoluted stone that he fell in love with, claiming it as worthy of him paying reverence to . He thereupon put on his official robes, took his official’s scepter, and bowed to the stone in respect. This is one story of Mi Fu’s reportedly naïve yet eccentric behavior.
Shih Yu-tse, a native of Hsun-t’ien (modern Peking), specialized in painting landscapes, figures, and ladies. This painting emphasizes the strange shape of the large stone, the actions of the figure also being quite exaggerated. It thus reflects the late Ming trend of using eccentricity for archaic effect.
Shih Yu-tse, whose style name was P'u-lin, was from Peking. His landscapes were elegant and refined, and he also excelled at depicting beautiful women.
The subject of this painting concerns the story of Mi Fu paying homage to a rock. Mi Fu (1051-1107) was a famous calligrapher during the Sung dynasty. His passion to admire unusual rocks became his trait. He once acquired a rock which he appreciated so much that he put on his best official clothes and, carrying a tablet used by civil servants in audience with an emperor, paid homage to the stone.
