From Blossoming Protest to Democratic Rise: Student Movements in Taiwan In 1990, the Wild Lily Student Movement marked a new chapter after the lifting of martial law. Students gathered of their own accord in Taipei City’s Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Square, staging sit-ins, pitching tents, and raising banners calling for the full re-election of the National Assembly. In doing so, they became an important force during a period of political change. In the decades that followed, the Wild Strawberry Movement, the Sunflower Movement, and the Bluebird Movement appeared in turn, linking different generations through shared concern for democratic procedures and public affairs. Through successive waves of social transformation, student activism gained momentum and became an essential part of Taiwan’s democratic journey.
