Toys Across Generations: What Are You Playing With? Lu Xun, often regarded as the father of modern Chinese literature, once wrote in his prose essay Kites: “Play is the most legitimate activity of children, and toys are their angels.” Toys not only carry the joys of childhood but also shape children’s understanding of the world. In postwar Taiwan, contract manufacturing became an important foundation of industrial development, and the island gradually grew into one of the world’s major sites of toy production. From here, countless toys were shipped overseas, bringing joy, imagination, and dreams to children across the globe. This article looks back on that history, offering a glimpse into the rise—and later transformation—of Taiwan’s reputation as the “Kingdom of Toys.”
