Radiant in Rainbow Light: Stepping Forward on the Path to Gender Equality On 17 May 2019, when the gavel finally struck inside the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Outside on Qingdao East Road, the crowd erupted—cheers rose into the air, arms lifted in celebration, and many people broke into tears. For some, it was the moment they had hoped for all their lives: the right to marry, finally protected by law. Six years on, same-sex marriage has become part of everyday life in Taiwan, and conversations on gender and sexual diversity continue to deepen. The shining rainbow flag—now a familiar sight across the island—flies at major Pride marches and can be seen in local communities and businesses throughout the year. Its presence shows that Taiwan’s push for gender equality is still in motion, and that every step forward mirrors the changes taking place across society.
