字體樣本簿
鑄字行在活版印刷產業興盛的年代，生意來往的對象是印刷廠，每家鑄字行的字體都有一些差異，因此會製作「字體樣本簿」供生意往來的客戶參考字體樣貌和大小，「字體樣本簿」即為商品「型錄」。日星鑄字行張介冠老闆描述，早年最理想的範本為中南行的字體樣本簿，裡面將數十種的英文字型的字體名稱都有標示清楚。
日星鑄字行目前使用的字體樣本簿，是1976年由剛退伍的張介冠所規劃，英文字體標示的方式是按照字體大小，用編號的方式編排。但因為當時中南行為台灣最大的鑄字行，許多其他鑄字行也會在自己的樣本簿中標示對應於中南行相同鉛字的編號，以利客戶詢問訂購。例如日星鑄字行的英文字體編號「五號4」便與中南行的英文字體編號「5009」是同一種字體。
日星的「字體樣本簿」中文主要為黑體、宋體、楷體三種，但為了讓客戶能看出印刷上的樣貌，所以張介冠在當時選擇了一些在閱讀時看到的勵志文章、金句等作為應用，編排印製於字體樣本簿上。排版完成後，由大龍峒的印刷廠印製1000本，於1977年印製完成。當年日星的經常性往來客戶約200家，加上零散客戶約300至400家，因此印製的1000本至今還剩下約十幾本。
沿用至今的字體樣本簿，除了中、英文，另有賀字、日文，及為數眾多的花邊、記號、符號等，整本鉛字排版及活版印刷，將整間鑄字行的字體形貌，濃縮於一本小冊之中。
In the heyday of letterpress printing, type foundries did business with printing plants. Because every type foundry’s typefaces were slightly different from those of others, each type foundry created its own type sample book as a reference for its clients. In fact, the type sample book was a product catalog for a type foundry.
Chang Chieh-kuan, the present owner of Ri Xing Type Foundry, said that Chung NaN Type Foundry’s type sample book was a perfect template for other foundries. Tens of English letter typefaces were clearly shown in this type sample book.
The type sample book that Ri Xing is using now was created by Chang when he was discharged from the military in 1976. Different English letter typefaces were numbered and shown according to typeface size. Because Chung NaN was the biggest type foundry in Taiwan in the past, many type foundries gave their English letter typefaces numbers corresponding to Chung NaN’s English letter typefaces in the type sample book for the convenience of their clients. For example, English letter typeface NO.5-4 at Ri Xing was the same as English letter typeface NO.5009 at Chung NaN.
Ri Xing has three traditional Chinese typefaces in its sample book : Heiti (黑體), Songti (宋體) and Kaiti (楷體). At that time, in order to show clients the effect of traditional Chinese typefaces printed on sheets, Chang had chosen some motivational articles and famous sayings, and tried to print them with different traditional Chinese typefaces in the sample book. After typesetting, the type galley was sent to the printing plant in Dalongdong and one thousand copies of the sample book were printed in 1917. Afterwards Ri Xing sent a copy to every client including two hundred regulars and three hundred to four hundred one-time clients. Therefore, there are more than ten copies left at Ri Xing.
This type sample book is still in use today. Besides English letters and traditional Chinese characters, Japanese characters, Chinese greeting characters, decorative streaks, marks and signs are added to this type sample book. This is to say, this type sample book is a miniature of Ri Xing.
