排版，即將文字與圖像進行版面編輯的動作。以往，在鑄字行買了鉛字後，印刷廠的排版師傅便要將這些鉛字在排版桌上進行排版。

過往台灣大型的排版桌大抵上的形制分為上下兩層，立面的上層是罫線架，是台灣特有的收納罫線的方式，依照鉛角比例裁好放於格子中；下方水平面為排版台，在此處進行排版動作，右手邊有鉛角箱，內裝有100種以上的鉛角。鉛角是配合七種以上的鉛字規格所設計的，它的功能很像電腦的空白鍵，透過鉛角使文字位於適當的位置上。

排好版後，會用棉線將鉛字綁在一起。使用完的鉛角會再歸位，這是讓學徒儘早熟悉各種鉛角大小規格很好的方式，透過觸摸會使他們更加清楚位置和規格，這樣未來才可以自己排版。排好後的版先送到打樣機進行打樣，校對有沒有缺字、錯字、壞字，或者鉛字方向錯置，對照原稿做校正與改版，確認無誤後，才能付梓印刷。

Typesetting is a process of setting text and images onto a page. In the past, printing plant's typesetting masters set types on the typesetting table after buying types in type foundries. 

The typesetting table in Taiwan can be divided into two compartments:  upper and lower compartment. The upper one is the k-line container that is a special way in Taiwan to store k-lines in different lengths that can match up with different kinds of quadrats.

The level surface of the lower one is the typesetting table where the typesetting masters set types. On the right side of the typesetting table is the quadrat container with more than one hundred kinds of quadrats. These quadrats are designed for more than seven sizes of types. The function of quadrats is similar to that of the space bar of a computer keyboard. Therefore, the typesetting masters can put types in their proper place by using quadrats.  

After typesetting, the typesetting masters bound the thread around the type form to keep the binding tight and return used quadrats back to the quadrat container as well. In fact, returning these used quadrats back to the quadrat container is a good way to help apprentices familiar with the different kinds and sizes of quadrats. By touching these types, these apprentices will know more about where they should place quadrats into and which quadrats they should use. Afterwards, the typesetting masters will send this type galley to the proofing press to make a test copy and compare it with the manuscript. At this point, the typesetting masters will check if any words are missing, wrong, worn or placed in the wrong direction. When the typesetting masters have confirmed the content of test copy is correct, it is ready for printing.
