Taiwan is one of the most mountainous islands in the world, at least in that the Island has 48 mountains of 3,030 metres and 115 mountains of more than 2,121 meters in height. The highest mount, Niitaka, was formerly known by different names such as Gyokuzan, Mt. Morrison and Mt. Baftoncan. The present name was given by the Great Emperor Meiji in 1903.
