Prying for Tortoises

There is "praying for tortoises" custom on the Lantern Festival. On that day, the temples would provide many bread tortoises for the believers to pray for as an auspicious gift from the gods. The tortoises is the symbol of longevity, so the tortoise gifts from gods could bring safety and well being of the life in the coming year. If the wishes of safety and well being come true in that year, the believers would donate another bigger or more bread tortoises to temples on the next yearʹs Lantern Festival to provide to other believers who are also in need to pray for good fortunes. Therefore, it constitute a virtuous circle: year by year, the more the bread tortoises in the temples are, the greater the blessings from the gods become.
