According to the Taoist holistic cosmology, one’s fate is determined by the celestial bodies and the star gods or goddesses could give good fortunes and blessings to those who serve them piously. The Goddess of ‘Bei Dou’(Big Dipper,北斗) is named ‘Dou Mu’(the Mother Goddess of the Big Dipper, 斗姥) and in charge of prolonging life and dispelling distress. Like ‘Kuang Ming Lamp’(the Lamp for Bright Future,光明燈), the temples in Taiwan would prepare ‘Dou Lamp’ (Lamp for the Goddess of Big Dipper) in Spring Festival for the believers to register to light, and hold Taoist rituals for praying ‘Dou Mu’ to give blessings.
