Traditionally, New Year Paintings are one kind of the block print arts, and could be distinguished roughly into three types according to their contents: 1. The portrait of the gods of good fortune such as Men Shen (the Gods at Doors, always appear in a pair,門神), Tsai Shen (the God of Wealth,財神) and Tsao Shen (the Stove God /Kitchen God,灶神)for driving out evil spirits. 2. The auspicious paintings of ‘New Year Flowers’, ‘Ju Bao Pen’(Bowls full of Jewelry, 聚寶盆) and “Gold Ingots” (金元寶) for welcoming good fortunes and treasures. 3. The paintings of folk tales like The History of the Three Kingdoms(三國演義) and Detective Cases of His Honor Bao(包公案).
