The legend has it that Chang Er was the queen of the ancient hero king Hou Yi (后 羿) who had shot down nine suns on the sky and saved the people from the serious drought caused by the ten suns which had once being shining at the same time. Despite the many versions of the plots about why Hou Yi got the elixir and why Chang Er stole the elixir of her husband, Chang Er just ate it and flied to the moon and became the Moon Goddess in the end. Actually, the archetype of Chang Er is the goddess named "Chang Yi" (常儀) who bathed the moon according to the ancient myth. The pronunciation of Chang Yi has later transformed into Chang Er and gave birth to the legend about Chang Er, the Moon Goddess. In the Taoist tradition, the Moon Goddess is named ʹTai Yin Hsing Junʹ (太陰星君), and in the Buddhist belief She is the Moonlight Bodhisattva (月光菩薩).
