For the Buddhism, the Ghost Festival is called ʹujlanbanaʹ or ʹullumpanaʹ (盂蘭盆) which means "absolving one (the ghosts) from the sufferings of hanging by the feet (in the hell)"(解倒懸). These "saving" activities, hosted by the Buddhist masters and held in the temples, will last for a month from the 1st day of the 7th lunar month when the Door of the Hell is opened to the 1st day of the 8th lunar month when the Door of the Hell is closed again. It gives the hungry ghosts, always in a polite way called as ʹgood brothersʹ (好兄弟), a chance to leave the underworld for a month to enjoy the feasts of the sacrifices offered in the Buddhist rituals.
