Dragon Boat Races in Erlong Village

One of the most distinctive and localized dragon boat races is in Erlong Village (二龍村) in Jiao Si(礁溪), Yilan County(宜蘭縣). It originated from the native rituals of the Ping Pu people(平埔族) to offer sacrifices to the River God and scare the evil spirits in the water by rowing boats on the river to and fro for twelve times. Later on with the immigration of the Han people into Yilan, this ritual has been gradually syncretized with the custom of racing dragon boat on the Dragon Boat Festival. The race has no judge and no time limit, the only two teams of Chi Wu Lan (淇武蘭) , whose boat is of green bottom, and Chou Tzu Wei(州仔尾), whose boat is of red bottom, will race repeatedly on the Erlong River(二龍溪) until the sunset.
