The Tomb festival falls on the 5th solar terms- Ching Ming(清明, April 5th), so it is also called the Ching Ming Festival. The term is the time when it gradually becomes warm, and trees and flowers begin to bud. The earth is covered with new bright plants clothes and all things are fresh and clear. People could take the advantage of the nice weather for going out to rural areas to visit the graves of their ancestors. This custom originated from the ritual of offering sacrifices at tombs in ancient times, which gradually become a prevalent practice during the Tang(唐) and Song(宋) Dynasties. The Herbs Rice Cake(草仔粿) is one of the traditional sacrifices offered to the ancestors at tombs. It is made of the sticky rices and a special herb called Gnaphalium, so the cooked herbs rice cake appears in deep grass green and tastes of refreshing herbal fragrance with chewy texture.
