There are three legendary explanations about the orgin of the Fireworks Display in Yen Suei town: 1. The fireworks display was a welcoming ceremony held for the emperor who had visited the town at the night of the Lantern Festival. 2. It was a traditional custom of the Lantern Festival brought into Taiwan by the immigrants from Fukien. 3. There had been a plague of cholera terrorizing the local residents and resulting in terrible casulty. The Lord Guan (關公) told the believers to set off fireworks at the Lantern Festival night and finally successfully chasing away the plague. Among these explanations, the third one is based on the religious beliefs in the Lord Guan and has been broadly accepted by the public.
